These activities are one of the many highlights in our Cadet Calendar. Each year our Cadets get to sample a range of Bush Tuckers and try their hand at making their own traditional damper. Early in the year we have a range of native Australian fruits and vegetables complemented by a meats such as Kangaroo, Emu, Crocodile and, if available, Widgety Grubs. This day always produces as lot of interesting looks and reactions as the Cadets experience new taste sensations with these foods.
Later in the year, during the cooler months, cadets work as a team to cook a traditional damper. Some put their bush craft skills to use creating a small camp fire, while their team mates get on with the task of mixing the ingredients for the damper. By the time fires are ready, the dough is mixed and ready to be cooked. There is just enough time at the end for the cadets to enjoy fresh hot damper, although some get a bit anxious and remove them from the coals too early leaving the damper a little doughy in the middle.
Both days are very enjoyable experiences with everyone keen to try a variety of new foods and keen to participate each year.
